Satpura, the title of this monumental work from 1984, refers to the range of hills towering over the Narmada river, on whose forested banks S.H. Raza was born. In this piece, Raza’s abstract expressionism gives way to a more controlled network of intersecting lines and planes. The colours used are predominantly related to the earth: graduated sienna, yellow ochre, red and brown, symbolizing the majestic mountains. These colours are highlighted by touches of green representing vegetation, and white and yellow lines evoking the sky. The triangles formed by his diagonals are reminiscent of the Satpura range of hills in Central India and are reflective of Raza’s oeuvre of using geometry and cosmological symbology, to communicate his vision of nature and universe.
