The history of chewing paan (a mixture of areca nut and betel leaf), dates back about 2,500 years in India and other countries in South East Asia. A cultural activity that is considered an important part of tradition, it is sometimes elevated to a level of ceremony by the beautifully crafted accessories dedicated to it through the ages, much like the Japanese tea ceremony.

This exquisite brass paan box in the majestic shape of a peacock, is an old collectible from Hyderabad. Both the back and the tail of the box can be opened, with compartments inside to keep the betel leaves, and other paan ingredients. The box is in a good condition with a dark patina that gives it a lovely shine. There is a slight dent on the back, and a few scratches on the tail.
