




Gulabo...original handpainted by Rupsona Chitrakar in the Kalighat Style is an ode to womanhood.Β
The Kalighat paintings developed in the 19th century in the Bengal presidency, as folk art with traveling scroll painters or the patuas. The art form saw new influences from Mughal revivalists toΒ British settlers, with the advent of Sanskrit and western theaters to new printing forms. Plus, with the opportunity to sell cheaper souvenirs to travellers to holy places saw pop culture influences in Pattachitra. The Kalighat painters interacted with the colonial paintings and began the use of water colors, shaded figures, folio-sized mill made papers.Β
