The vertical stroke or bar (दंड) is a defining feature of the Devanagari script. Letters can be graphically classified into groups based on this stroke—those with a full vertical side bar (स, न, म...), a central bar (क,फ, ऋ), and a short bar (ट, ड, द,...). The letter ‘र’ (Ra) stands apart—lacking this stroke altogether.
Despite lacking a key structural element, ‘र’ is never seen as incomplete or inferior. Instead, it is embraced by fellow letters, playing a vital role in forming meaningful words. The letter's quiet adaptability, and its acceptance within the Varnamala (alphabet) serves as a metaphor for inclusivity, empathy, unity and beauty in diversity. It reminds us that individuals with unique traits or perceived differences should not merely be accepted, but celebrated.
