This stunning brass prabhavali (the protective arch around the idol) is from Karnataka. The prabhavali is a representation of the tantras, which suggest that the deity be visualised as seated within or emerging out of the solar or lunar orb. At the apex of this unusual cornet shaped prabhavali is a Kirtimukha - β€˜the face of glory’ - the bulging face of a ravenous lion meant to avert malignant influences and protect. At the base of the prabhavali, which has been embellished with intricate engraving work, are two makara. They symbolize water, the source of all existence, and are an auspicious symbol. On the right-hand side at the base is also a trishul (trident) the symbol of Shiva, and on the left is a small hand drum, or damaru, which Shiva uses to drum the beat of his dance of creation and destruction. Behind the binding band, which runs across the prabhavali, are circular holders which would have been used to stand brass flags with different religious symbols.
The size mentioned is with the custom-made stand.
