These shields feature the arms of the Dutch East India Company, ornamented with Neptune and a mermaid, and those of Batavia, flanked by Dutch lions. According to the inscription on the latter, the city of Jacatra (now Jakarta) was β€˜Conquered on 30 May in the year 1619’. That same year Governor-General Jan Pietersz Coen renamed it Batavia and built a castle with dockyards, warehouses and offices.
