This artwork is part of the 'Remembering Souza' series. Constructing the human figure as a site of conflict, desire, and irreverence, this series is Laxman Aelayβs complementary homage to highly revered modern progressive Indian artist, F.N. Souza (1924-2002). It manifests by confronting the restless energy of the artist in creating an uncompromising modernist depiction of the human figure as never fixed, but always shifting between the sacred and the profane. In doing so, dense layers of strokes cry out to the unfinished and unsettling condition of human life.
