Katakhali (Kathakali Dancers)

This work stages two masked visages as icons suspended between ceremony and anonymity, their turquoise skin and hard, graphic contours giving them the charged stillness of carved talismans. Dense, mosaic-like markmaking and a riot of reds, golds, and whites in the headwraps create a centrifugal energy, while the forward figure’s steady gaze anchors the composition with an intimate, almost confrontational calm. The ornamental border operates like a protective threshold—part lace, part shrine—framing the subjects as both celebrated and contained, suggesting how cultural identity can be simultaneously worn, guarded, and performed.
