Deccan Oil Container 02

This is a Deccan or Mughal brass oil container from north Karnataka. This tall, round container with flattened sides is repousse, engraved and cast brass. It has two handles in the shape of parakeets with long tails on either side and a long, tapering spout that unscrews so it can be refilled. At the base of the spout is an amalaka, a cushion like architectural element seen in columns in Hindu temples. To the side of the spout is a hook like piece with a lotus bud finial, which would have been used to rest the finger when pouring the oil. On both the front and back, is a beautiful and finely engraved double lotus design. These vessels were used in palaces and elsewhere to re-fill oil lamps and torches. The stand is new and handmade specifically for this piece.
The size is 7 x 4.2 x 17.7 inches with the stand. The height of the container without the stand is 17 inches. This piece is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
