A Herat Mushwani kilim of warm amber ground with a geometric diamond lattice β the compound pile-on-flat-weave technique of the Mushwani tribe giving the surface its characteristic depth.
There is a reason the Mushwani kilim is sought out by those who know Afghan flat-weave well: it does what no standard kilim can. By knotting a short pile directly onto selected motifs within the flat-weave ground β a technique unique to this Turkmen-descended tribe south of Herat β the Mushwani weaver creates a surface with physical depth, the principal diamond and geometric forms rising from the field in tactile relief. On a warm amber-honey ground, the lattice of elongated diamond devices in madder red, deep indigo, and ivory builds across the field with a rhythmic energy that rewards the hand as much as the eye. The palette β earthy, warm, approachable β sits naturally alongside wood, stone, and leather. Woven entirely in wool by Mushwani craftspeople in the Herat region.
A hand-knotted & woven rug is an investment piece. With proper care it will last a lifetime and become a cherished heirloom. Each knot in this collection is tied by hand by nomadic tribesmen, making every piece entirely one of a kind.
Variations in colour and tone β known as abrash β are a hallmark of authentic handmade rugs, particularly tribal and vintage pieces. Wear and age only add to their beauty.
