Van Rijckevorsel commissioned the Belgian painter Fernand Khnopff to paint portraits of himself and his wife Maria, the artistβs aunt. The poetic quality of Khnopffβs paintings had won him popularity as a portraitist among the Brussels bourgeoisie in 1888. From the correspondence about the commission, it appears that Khnopff chose these openwork frames, inspired by Renaissance models, himself.
