It's vital to check your pulleys during routine maintenance. 
Most pulleys on factory engines are plastic and are prone to wear or even failure, and a faulty pulley could leave you stranded. 
Also the factory mounted the water pump pulley at the front of the engine near the road. This arrangement is troublesome for many enthusiasts.

Aluminum version of the standard water pump pulley used on M50 and M52 engines.
