These are rare first editions of Thomas Bacon's two volumes of β€˜First Impressions and Studies from Nature in Hindostan; embracing an outline of the voyage to Calcutta, and five years residence in Bengal and the Doab, from 1831 to 1836.’ The book is illustrated with 25 plates, mostly lithographed, plus front pieces, and a map. They are published by Wm. H. Allen and Co, Leadenhall Street, London in 1837. Chapters include one on Madras, Calcutta, the banks and cities of the Ganges and several on Delhi.

Background History:
Thomas Bacon (1813-1892) was a Lieutenant with the Bengal Horse Artillery from 1835 to 1838. He served as a chaplain in Malta from 1846-8, and was made Canon of Gibraltar in 1847. The Doab was the area between the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers, extending from the Sivalik Hills to the two rivers' confluence at Allahabad.

Condition:
Very good condition with some light foxing and a few stains. Light rubbing on the corners of cover. Bound in contemporary brown morocco covers with gilt panels enclosing decorative line ornament, floret corner pieces and gilt panelled spines. All page edges are in gilt.
