This old Mysore School painting depicts Garuda, the vahana of Lord Vishnu. Garuda, a humanoid bird, appears in both Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Generally known as a protector, Garuda is believed to have the power to swiftly go anywhere, ever watchful and an enemy of the serpent. He has the torso and limbs of a man but the talons, wings and beak of an eagle. This painting is highly unusual as it is a cut-out that has then been placed on backing paper. There are some minor stains on the backing paper, which is due to passage of time. The frame is elaborately carved and beautifully coloured, adding to the overall beauty of this piece.
