‘The Violin and its Music’ by George Hart. This is the companion volume to ‘The Violin and its Famous Makers’. Published in London by Dulau and Co, 37 Soho square. Mdccclxxxv (1885). First published in 1881. Numerous wood engravings from photographs of the works of Stradivari, Guarneri, Amati, and others. George Hart (1839-1891) was an instrument dealer in London. Hart and Sons was founded in 1825.

“Violin and its famous makers was received with so much indulgence by my friends and admirers of the leading instrument. The signs of approval which have from time to time been brought under my notice with regard to the publication of that book, prompted me to again occupy some portion of my leisure hours in the preparation of another volume, treating of the remaining branch of the same subject, namely: The Violin and its Music. I need scarcely remark, that I am not unmindful of the distinctive character of the two undertakings, and of the wholly different knowledge necessary to be brought to bear upon each.”

Fair condition. Recased green cloth cover with gilt lettering on spine. Gilt vignette of violin cut from the first edition and mounted on front board. Toned throughout, plates discoloured, with scattered foxing. Inscribed on the title page by owner in 1990s.
