The Goat-Fish
In Greek mythology, Capricornus is identified as Pan, the god with a goat's head, who saved himself from the monster Typhon by giving himself a fish's tail and diving into a river. He also saved Zeus by distracting the monster long enough for Zeus to escape. In gratitude, Zeus transferred Pan to the heavens as the constellation Capricorn. In another myth, the Capricorn constellation is identified as Amalthea, the goat-tending nymph who was the foster mother to Zeus as a baby. She protected him from his father Cronos, who devoured all his babies after birth. He later put his foster mother in the sky as the Capricorn constellation.
