Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is naturally present in small amounts in various fruits and vegetables. The Finnish name for Xylitol is "koivusokeri", or birch sugar, a reference to the extraction of Xylitol from birch bark. NOW Pure Xylitol is derived from a Non-GMO corn source. Considerable amounts of Xylitol is formed in the body every day as a result of normal metabolic processes. Although it is classified as a carbohydrate, this sweet crystalline substance is slowly absorbed from the digestive tract and does not cause rapid rises in blood glucose. NOW Real Food Pure Xylitol Powder is derived from corn and is the perfect healthy substitute for sugar in many cooking applications. For best results, simply replace each 1/2 teaspoon of sugar with an equivalent amount of xylitol powder.

Diarrhea may occur with excessive consumption. If this occurs, reduce intake.

Ingestion of Xylitol, in any product is a veterinary emergency if consumed by pets, especially dogs, ferrets and rabbits. If you suspect your pet ingested xylitol by either observing this happen or finding evidence of a chewed container or product, and the animal is acting normal, you should attempt to give animal(s) a small meal and at the same time, immediately seek veterinarian attention. If you have evidence that they ingested a product that contains xylitol and the animal(s) is not acting normal you should seek veterinarian attention immediately without giving the animal any food.
