This is an oleograph of “Damayanti” by Ravi Varma, from the 1930s. Damayanti is a princess in a love story from the epic Mahabharata. The image depicts Damayanti in a white sari with gold brocade, restlessly waiting for her husband King Nala of the Nishadha Kingdom. Her companion in a purple sari cools her with a peacock fan, showing just a hint of impatience with a hand on her hip.
The artwork is bordered by red fabric; the fabric has shifted away from the frame on the right side with passage of time.
