Story
It was the most exciting time of the year “ Onam was just around the corner. She dutifully marked each day leading up to the festival on the calendar with a small tick. When the sun finally dawned on the day shed been waiting so eagerly for, she hurriedly took a shower, wore her festive best and hurried to the town square, where she joined her peers for the ˜pookalam or flower rangoli competition. For a moment, she felt her mind go completely blank. A wave of panic washed over her “ shed been preparing for this the entire year and she could not afford to forget! But then, she took a few deep, calming breaths and let her mind drift to all the fantastical creatures she had met, in the many folktales her grandmother would read to her. In her minds eye, she saw a beautiful white elephant decorated with gold jewels and flowers. The elephant floated before her eyes before melting away into a mound of white grains of rice. She instantly knew that that would what she would bring to life “ with the rice grains, flour, white blossoms, marigolds and asters. As she worked, the bare floor bloomed into a vision of perfection.
