Theyyam Body Mask 01

This is a Bhoota (Bhuta) or Theyyam bronze body mask from Tulu Nadu (coastal Karnataka/Kerala). The mask is crafted with two cobras (snakes) with their rearing heads at each shoulder. The collar is decorated with a looped necklace design and an engraved pendant. These body masks would be worn as spiritual attire as part of annual ceremonies (still practised today) to invoke demigods and spirits. The ceremony last several evenings and involves the use of ritual objects such as this body mask, face mask, ornaments, as well as offerings.
