The present work belongs to the rich tradition of Indian devotional oleographs that flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, following the transformative impact of Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906). Ravi Varma’s pioneering use of academic realism combined with Indian mythological subject matter, and his establishment of chromolithographic printing through the Ravi Varma Press, fundamentally reshaped the visual culture of religious imagery in India. Presses such as Ravi Uday Press, Ghatkopar, operated within this extended legacy, adopting and disseminating a visual vocabulary characterised by naturalistic figuration, narrative clarity, and accessible devotional iconography. While not directly affiliated with Raja Ravi Varma, these presses played a crucial role in carrying forward his influence into the domestic sphere, making sacred imagery widely available to households across the subcontinent.
The application of bead and mica embellishment reflects a later layer of devotional engagement, transforming the printed image into a tactile and luminous object suited for worship. Such works occupy an important intersection between fine art, popular print culture, and lived religious practice in early 20th-century India.
