Also called Vettila Chellam, the chellam is a box primarily used to store betel quids - small parcels of betel leaves, areca nuts, slaked lime and tobacco. While chewing these betel leaf preparations ('paan') is a customary tradition in South Asia, authentic chellams are quite a rare find today. This old chellam, made of solid bronze, is an interesting collectible and an ideal piece for vintage decor.
