This hand-colored etching by François Balthazar Solvyns, titled A Causer, offers a glimpse into the daily rhythms and religious traditions of late 18th-century Bengal. The central figure, depicted with an observant and documentary approach, is a causer—a gong ringer for priests in Calcutta. His lean frame and modest clothing suggest his role as a servant, yet the act of striking the gong holds deep ritual significance. Solvyns’ meticulous rendering, set against the backdrop of a weathered temple courtyard, captures a fleeting moment of devotion and duty. Part of Solvyns’ larger project documenting the people and occupations of Bengal, this image serves as a testament to the intricate cultural landscape of the region under British colonial rule.

These prints are printed on a fine quality ivory paper.

These are reproductions of old illustrations & in most cases will have the same imperfections as the original.
