This striking 1799 colored etching by François Balthazar Solvyns depicts a musician playing the ramsinga, a grand, curved wind instrument used in Indian ceremonial music. The ramsinga—often associated with temple rituals, processions, and royal announcements—produces deep, resonant sounds that carry through vast spaces, making it a powerful herald of tradition and celebration.

The musician, draped in a simple dhoti and turban, stands barefoot, raising the elaborate horn to his lips. The curvature of the instrument, reminiscent of a snake, adds a dramatic elegance to the composition. In the background, women peer over a crumbling wall, seemingly drawn by the commanding sound of the ramsinga. The rustic setting, with its palm trees and woven fences, situates this moment within the daily life of 18th-century Bengal.

These prints are printed on a fine quality ivory paper.

These are reproductions of old illustrations & in most cases will have the same imperfections as the original.
