Bhutas were used for worship of supernatural beings or divinised ancestral spirits in the coastal area of Karnataka and Kerala. There are around 350 Bhutas or β€˜spirits’ which are broadly divided into heroes of the past who met untimely ends, animals, the elements, and some whose origins are not known.

This rare collectible of a Bhuta lady is most likely from Mangalore. Painted in bright colours, this wooden piece is in a good condition. There is a small crack down the figure’s left shoulder and the left side of the skirt.
