The Chobi carpet is Kabul's great contribution to the Afghan canon β woven by Hazara craftspeople who took the classical Persian all-over floral and remade it with a restraint and a colour sense that is entirely their own. This is a large piece, and it announces itself quietly: a deep forest green field worked over entirely with an all-over vine scroll, gold and cream flowering forms emerging from the green in every direction, with no centre medallion, no hierarchy β just the continuous, unhurried movement of the pattern.
The border is warm and richly structured. At 110 knots per square inch on a cotton foundation, this is a carpet of serious scale and serious craft. One of the finest pieces in this collection.
