A Karabagh carpet of teal-blue field carrying a full figurative pastoral scene β women in traditional dress gathered in a garden β one of the most celebrated narrative traditions in Caucasian pile weaving.
The Karabagh region of Azerbaijan has been producing pictorial carpets since at least the nineteenth century, and the tradition draws on a range of influences: the Persian garden carpet, the European genre painting that arrived with Russian cultural contact, and the native Caucasian love of bold colour and vigorous botanical ornament. All three are fully present here. The teal-blue field β a colour that gives this carpet an immediate freshness uncommon in the broader Caucasian group β stages a full figurative scene: several women in corseted bodices and full-skirted traditional dress are gathered in a garden, flanked by stylised pink buildings, lime-green trees, and a gentle assembly of flowers and a lamb. The mood is pastoral and sociable β the narrative tradition at its most domestic, and entirely its own.
The border is characteristically Karabagh in its ambition: a deep navy ground carrying large, assertive floral medallions β roses and carnations in hot pink and lime green β at a scale that would dominate any other rug tradition. Here it simply frames. The palette across the whole piece β teal, hot pink, lime, orange, ivory, and navy β is vivid without being discordant: a colour literacy that the Karabagh tradition developed over centuries and that no design school has quite replicated. Hand-knotted in wool.
A hand-knotted rug is an investment piece. With proper care it will last a lifetime and become a cherished heirloom. Each knot in this collection is tied by hand, making every piece entirely one of a kind.
Variations in colour and tone β known as abrash β are a hallmark of authentic handmade rugs, particularly tribal and vintage pieces. Wear and age only add to their beauty.
