Immanence is a work reduced to black and white, in contrast to the colourful works that Raza is known for. A large black Bindu, against the white square in a diagonal fashion, reflects the geometrical forms of Raza’s vocabulary from the 1980s, which signified the earth and the sky. The elements seem to shimmer against the radiation of concentric squares around the white square. The faint white horizontals expanding outwards suggest a coming together of hundreds of individual voices. This work is a synthesis of the history and the agony of people, especially reflective of the time of India’s independence. The words by Mahatma Gandhi inspire hope from the depths of despair, with an aspiration for change.
