This octagonal brass thali or platter is from Mysore. In the central medallion is an engraved lotus motif, surrounded by palmette ornamentation of acanthus leaves. Around the rim is an etched, cross-hatching decoration.
In Hinduism, the lotus is the symbol of what is divine or immortal in humanity, and also of divine perfection. The lotus, depicted as a throne, is associated with many deities, but particularly Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, fortune, love, beauty and prosperity. This platter would have been used in puja or worship rituals.
