Shiva and Parvati (Pair)

Shiva and Parvati sculptures from Kerala in the Chola style, hand-carved in jackwood. The Chola Empire was a powerful dynasty that ruled a vast area of South India and parts of Southeast Asia from the 9th to 13th centuries CE. They were known for their strong navy, impressive architecture, and contributions to art, literature, and administration. Chola sculptures have little intricate ornamentation compared to the subsequent bronzes of the Vijayanagara and Nayaka period. There is gentle grace, a restrained and quiet elegance, an ethereal, out-worldly beauty, and above all else - a life beats in the heart of the figures which thereby enlivens the pieces. 
The Shiva measures 30 (H) x 11.5 (W) x 10 (D) inches (with stand) and Parvati measures 31.5 (H) x 9.5 (W) x 8 (D) inches (with stand).
