This is a large, bronze Durga mask from the Mysore region of Karnataka. The mask would have been used as an ornament for a stone sculpture. The goddess Durga is ambivalent in nature; she is both the sustainer and destroyer of men and nature. Durga is worshipped as a a fierce form of the protective mother goddess. She is associated with protection, strength, motherhood, destruction, and wars. Her mythology centres around combating evils and demonic forces that threaten peace and prosperity. Durga is depicted here wearing an engraved crown and earrings.
