A rare work on black paper, “Chain of Thought” is a contemplation on the nature of meditation. Ashu’s use of pattern references the transition from chaos to clarity. The free-flowing black patterns on either side of the figure are a manifestation of disorder, while the unbroken chain of circles that emanates upwards from the head represents the manner in which meditative thoughts seamlessly flow from one to the next, towards a state of pure connectedness. Ashu’s use of stark monochrome is especially evocative of a state of deep contemplation. Through an elegant play of black and white, the artist adds an illusory sense of depth to the otherwise simple work.
