The Kalainav kilim takes its name from a Herati weaving tradition known for its large-format medallion compositions β ambitious pieces that achieve through flat-weave alone what pile carpets require knot density to accomplish. This piece, three decades old, has developed the kind of presence that age lends to well-made things: the camel and warm khaki of its field has settled into itself, the elongated central medallion in navy and ivory carrying all the compositional authority of a much more expensive object.
The border moves in geometric bands of rust-red, navy and cream, a frame worthy of what it contains. Wholly wool, flat-woven in Herat. Large, aged, and entirely worth the space it takes.
