This is an extremely rare tinned copper Mughal platter or thali, in a trefoil shape. The platter is engraved with a boteh pattern. The boteh or buta is an almond or pine cone-shaped motif with a sharp-curved upper end. The boteh is thought to be of Persian origin, and is often seen as a decorative element in carpets, architecture or art.
This platter would have probably been used to serve paan. Different boxes for various ingredients of paan would be placed along with lime boxes on the platter, to serve to guests. The history of chewing paan dates back thousands of years. The beautifully crafted accessories associated with chewing paan elevated it to a level of ceremony, much like the Japanese and the art of drinking tea.
