This is a Deccan open cut work, tinned copper, oval platter or thali with Indo-Islamic designs. The central octagonal panel has an engraved floral cartouche with two concentric bands of floral design around it, interspersed with a plain band. On the outer rim of the platter is an intricate openwork design. This platter would probably have been used for serving paan. The history of chewing paan dates back about 2,500 years and its beautifully crafted accessories elevated it to a level of ceremony, much like the Japanese and tea. On this platter would be placed different pandans, boxes for the various ingredients of paan, and lime boxes to serve to guests. The size mentioned is with the custom-made stand.
