Portrait of Ferdinand Magellan Art Print

This print features Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer who commanded the first ship to travel around the world.  The text surrounding the portrait includes phrases like  “Ferdinandus Dux” (Ferdinand, Leader) and “Magellanus Inventor Australis Terraeque” (Magellan, Discoverer of the Southern Land). The poem below details Magellan’s voyage as captain-general of the  Spanish fleet on an expedition to  “the spacious lands of the South” and  mentions the  strait named after him. The poem also talks about Magellan’s death during the voyage.
