This is an elegant reverse glass painting of a European subject by a Chinese artist. It depicts the River Danube or Rhine with a small red sailing boat, and is from the 1930s/40s. An elegant spire rises above what look like Tudor style houses.
The technique of reverse glass painting was introduced to China in the late 1600s by its European trading partners, who manufactured and shipped the plate glass necessary for its production. By the middle of the following century, artists specializing in producing images for foreign markets were well-established at Chinaβs primary international port, Guangzhou, or Canton, as well as the capital of Beijing. It is believed the reverse glass painting technique was first introduced to India by trade with China towards the end of the 18th century.
