Lady Smoking a Huqqa

This is a reverse glass painting from western India, made by a Chinese artist.
The background shows a terrace, behind which a line of trees is visible in the distance. In the foreground is a fine carpet with delicate floral patterns. A young woman sits comfortably on the ground, leaning against cushions supported by a bolster pillow.
The rendering of her features reveals a strong European influence, although the fineness of the drawing and the soft palette dominated by blues, whites and reds reflect the Chinese element. Particular attention has been given to the intricate jewellery and detailing of the costume.
