This is a Deccan brass, repoussΓ© and engraved platter or thali from Karnataka. In the central medallion are six engraved parrots or parakeets, which are surrounded by concentric bands of geometric patterns, plain bands and an intricate scrollwork floral band. The parrot (which is a parakeet) is associated in Hindu mythology with Kama, the God of Love. The parrot is also often used to show the gentler side of the Goddess or Devi, rather than the lion or tiger. This platter would have been used in puja/worship rituals. The platter has a handmade brass holder so that it can be hung on the wall.Β
