This artwork is part of a series by Ashu Gupta titled “Dialogues”, that depict a range of emotions, ideas, inner thoughts, and feelings. The contemporary artist chooses different subjects, delving into their consciousness and bringing to life their internal dialogues. Showcasing breathtaking detailing in her work, Ashu uses the intricacy of her chosen techniques to make a poignant statement about the complexity of human thought, dreams and desires that are often unspoken.
“Dreamer” displays Ashu’s experimentation with paper-piercing as an artistic medium; one that she discovered on accident and quickly incorporated into her oeuvre. Multi-coloured circle patterning on the dress is offset by wings of pure white; a close viewing reveals a delicate series of tableaux that represent the artist’s dreamscape. Ashu purposefully forgoes text in favour of imagery to reflect the idea that dreams are often remembered as feelings and not through language. Paper-piercing brought on the added challenge of working on the reverse side of the paper, but for Ashu this only accentuated the meditative quality of the work.
