This is a brass thali (platter) from Tamil Nadu, created using the techniques of repousse and engraving. The central medallion features a finely engraved Hamsa. The beautiful rings surrounding the hamsa are engraved in geometric patters as well as foliate and floral designs. Etched on one of the plain bands in Tamil is βSri Velangani Mariamma Koil 14/12/1977, V. Ramaswamy Ubhayam, Trichy 8β. The outer border is fluted. This platter would have been used in puja or worship rituals.
Hamsa, which is possibly a swan or goose, is revered by Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. It is seen as a symbol of purity, detachment and divine knowledge. Hamsa symbolizes the highest level of spiritual accomplishment as it swims in water, walks on earth and flies in the sky.
