This is a brass thali or platter from Tamil Nadu, created using the techniques of repousse and engraving. The central medallion depicts Hamsa - a swan or goose revered by Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. It is seen as a symbol of purity, detachment and divine knowledge. Hamsa symbolizes the highest level of spiritual accomplishment as it swims in water, walks on earth and flies in the sky.
Etched in Tamil in one of the plain concentric circles, is the name of N.R. Raghunatha, along with information about his donation of the platter on 6-1-1955, to the monastery Sri Rangunatha Swamigal Matam. Surrounding the Hamsa are plain, foliate and flower rings with an outer fluted border. This platter would have been used in puja or worship rituals.
