A Herat Barjasta kilim of amber-ivory ground with a great heraldic bird at its centre β€” a motif whose roots in Central Asian tribal iconography are as deep as Afghan weaving itself.
The bird β€” eagle, simurgh, peacock, phoenix β€” is among the oldest presences in the textile art of Central and South Asia. It appears on Sasanian silk, on Timurid tilework, on Mughal court carpets, and it appears here on the amber-ivory ground of this Herat Barjasta kilim, its wings fully extended in the heraldic posture that has marked sovereign authority and protective power across the region for two millennia. The Barjasta compound technique β€” flat-weave ground with selective knotted pile raised on the principal motifs β€” gives the bird form dimensional presence: it rises from the surface, rendered in deep navy and crimson, the fan-tail resolved in bold horizontal dark stripes that anchor the figure with architectural authority. The deep navy border, set with bold rosette devices in red and ivory, and the horizontal elem bands at the foot complete a composition of rare totemic power. Woven entirely in wool by Baluch craftspeople in the Herat region.
A hand-knotted rug is an investment piece. With proper care it will last a lifetime and become a cherished heirloom. Each knot in this collection is tied by hand by nomadic tribesmen, making every piece entirely one of a kind.
Variations in colour and tone β€” known as abrash β€” are a hallmark of authentic handmade rugs, particularly tribal and vintage pieces. Wear and age only add to their beauty.
