A Herat Maliky kilim of open ivory field with four bold cross-form medallions in burgundy and navy β€” a motif whose pre-Islamic roots in Central Asian tribal symbolism run deeper than its geometric surface suggests.
The cross is among the oldest motifs in Central Asian textile production β€” predating Islamic influence and carrying, in different tribal traditions, associations with the four directions, with protection, with the structure of the cosmos. In the hands of the Turkmen weavers of Herat, it becomes a formal device of considerable graphic power: four large cross-form medallions in deep burgundy and navy, disposed in a two-by-two arrangement across an open ivory field, each one resolved with structured geometric interior detail. The openness of the ivory ground is unusual in the Afghan kilim tradition, where the field is more commonly filled to capacity β€” here the white space is deliberate, allowing each medallion to declare itself with maximum clarity. Woven entirely in wool using the slit-woven tapestry technique.
A hand-woven rug is an investment piece. With proper care it will last a lifetime and become a cherished heirloom. Each knot in this collection is tied by hand by nomadic tribesmen, making every piece entirely one of a kind.
Variations in colour and tone β€” known as abrash β€” are a hallmark of authentic handmade rugs, particularly tribal and vintage pieces. Wear and age only add to their beauty.
