This artwork is part of a series by Ashu Gupta titled “Dialogues”, that depict a range of emotions, ideas, inner thoughts, and feelings. A set of two complementary works, “One Day at a Time” depicts the inner monologues of street vendors. Ashu considers the thoughts that weave through their minds as they go about their daily business, selling vegetables by the road or balloons at traffic signals: thoughts that characterise a life lived entirely in the moment. Ashu honours her protagonists’ lively sartorial sensibilities through an unprecedented use of vivid watercolour. The pattern is done entirely in dot patterned stippling, a process through which Ashu emulates the immediacy and urgency with which her characters live their lives, one day at a time.
